Wasting Little Time Getting Active

Though the weather has been erratic, I am focused on staying organized as 2024 begins to unfold. That means planning testimony to DC Council, listening to constituent concerns as the 2025 budget for DC is planned, and seeing projects get implemented following months (and sometimes years!) of effort.

In the coming months, Commissioner Lynda Laughlin (ANC 1C06) and I are assessing Adams Morgan's rat situation and looking to take action. The first thing we need is public input: we want to learn where rat infestation hot spots are located in the neighborhood. Then we'll organize an in-person event to clean up our streets and collect signatures to get DC's Department of Health to implement abatement efforts on key areas we identify.

Several neighbors and I worked together collecting data for the annual Point in Time Count, which helps inform government agencies as they allocate resources regarding homelessness

I had a moment to speak with DC firefighters about blood transfusions, budget needs, and the current state of emergency response in the District

Let's look back at January 2024, preview February 2024, meet our organization + business in focus, and see this month's video briefing.

WHAT WE DID
  • Re-elected (7-0) officers and confirmed committee assignments for ANC 1C in 2024

    • All ANCs are required to do this every calendar year

    • I'm excited to continue with another year as Chairperson of the Commission

  • Decided (7-0) the 2024 ANC 1C official meeting schedule

  • Supported (7-0) liquor license application for Maison, located at 1834 Columbia Rd NW

  • Supported (7-0) medical cannabis retailer license for Kaliiva, located at 1731 Columbia Rd NW

    • ANC 1C has been working hard to stay informed as DC's cannabis regulation takes new direction aimed to improve conditions for customers, vendors, and the general public

  • Extended ANC 1C's internship contract for another six months (passed 7-0)

  • Signed letter organized by ANC 1B regarding needed reforms for ANC special election procedures

  • Signed letter regarding proposed appointment to DC's sentencing commission

  • Testified at Zoning Commission hearing supporting map amendment at 1617 U Street NW

  • Attended Public Space Committee's informational session on small cell pole design for cell phone poles to be placed in public right-of-way

    • It is unlikely any poles in Adams Morgan will be affected by this project

  • Signed letter opposing nomination of Jack Evans to Commission on the Arts and Humanities

  • Signed ANC pledge supporting DC statehood

  • Participated in the annual Point in Time Count helping measure DC's unhoused population

  • Helped organize and attended an ANC chair summit

    • These informal gatherings are opportunities to discuss how ANCs across DC can better support one another

  • DDOT submitted a Notice of Intent to ANC 1C regarding the Columbia Road NW Bus Priority project

    • This project has been collecting public input for many months and is approaching the final phases before construction begins

    • If you have any outstanding comments to share, please do so before the March 15 deadline

WHAT'S UP NEXT
  • February 7: ANC 1C general meeting (agenda here, link to attend here)

  • February 29: deadline to respond to the ANC 1C rat hot spot survey

  • Ongoing: Ann Hughes Hargrove Park renovations are underway

    • Following several years of advocating that DPR use funds set aside for this park, I'm excited construction is finally happening

  • Ongoing: Smart lights are being installed throughout Ward 1 by DDOT

  • Multiple dates: DC Council are currently holding their annual performance oversight hearings for DC agencies
