Midway through a Fast-paced Year

Budget season is over just in time for dangerously hot weather. Following many weeks of advocacy, DC's municipal budget for fiscal year 2025 is finalized. In Adams Morgan, one notable win was getting funding to prevent erosion in Kalorama Park. That wasn't a coincidence: many neighbors and I have been urging for this investment for months. Thank you to everyone who contributed!

June 2024 was very busy with community events. And that's on top of the many constituent concerns I've been addressing on an individual basis with residents. Please be sure to keep sending me your thoughts on neighborhood affairs. Especially as we suffer the brutal heat of a climate crisis, communication is the first step to addressing community needs.

Under sunny skies, I joined ANC 1C colleagues to represent Adams Morgan in DC's Pride parade

Many neighbors gathered to inaugurate the SWIMMING public art project at Marie Reed Elementary

Let's look back at June 2024, shift forward to July 2024, meet our organization + business in focus, and see this month's video briefing.

WHAT WE DID
  • Supported medical cannabis retailer license applications for Funky Piece (6-0 with one abstention) and Vibez Print (6-1)

  • Supported (7-0) request to use public space to improve wheelchair access at 1630 and 1650 Fuller St NW

  • Continued discussing WMATA's proposed Better Bus Network

  • Secured funding for erosion prevention efforts in Kalorama Park

  • I'll continue to work with DPR to make sure these funds are used effectively

  • The security fund requirement for ANCs was eliminated

  • An obscure rule that frustrated many ANC treasurers, this legislative change occurred following ANC 1C's advice on the issue

  • Signed letter in support of Compass Coffee employees unionizing

  • Although not located in Adams Morgan, I joined dozens of commissioners across DC making it clear that union-busting is unacceptable

  • Walked in DC's Capital Pride Parade alongside the Office of ANCs

  • Attended Columbia Heights Day

  • While obviously not an Adams Morgan-specific event, I spoke with Pepco representatives on the possibility of preserving the Unity Mural on the soon-to-be redesigned substation near Marie Reed Elementary

WHAT'S UP NEXT
  • July 10: DMPED and the Adams Morgan BID will host a meeting on Adams Morgan economic development at 5pm in Shanklin Hall

  • July 10: ANC 1C general meeting (agenda here, link to attend here)

  • July 15: the public comment period for WMATA's proposed Better Bus Network ends

  • Be sure to review the initial network proposal and submit your thoughts

  • Ongoing: I am organizing with residents and commissioners regarding issues at residential properties controlled by UIP Property Management

  • If you've had problems while living in a UIP property and we haven't already spoken, please send me a message
