Looking Beyond Ballots

The 2024 election season is almost officially over. But whatever the results turn out to be, there will be work left ahead to address many challenges. The list of neighborhood-level concerns I've discussed with constituents lately is long and growing: rodent control, traffic safety, disruptive tenants, irresponsible landlords, park maintenance, public art projects, and small business retention are but a few examples.

One of the more effective tools I've relied upon as commissioner is a simple one: listening to residents. If you are in a tenants' union, condo board, or simply want to share your thoughts on neighborhood affairs, send me a message and we can schedule a time to chat. Especially with DC's next budget season quickly approaching, now is a good time to figure out what priorities I can advocate for in the coming months.

Adams Morgan's second annual Halloween dog costume contest was an overwhelming success, with nearly 100 canine competitors and hundreds more human neighbors who came to enjoy the event in Kalorama Park

Porchfest took place throughout Adams Morgan on November 2. The event is now held twice a year in the neighborhood, drawing thousands of people to enjoy live music at dozens of temporary stages

Now let's revisit October 2024, preview November 2024, meet our organization + business in focus, and see this month's video briefing.

WHAT WE DID
  • Passed a resolution (7-0) urging WMATA replace the outgoing Circulator bus routes with sufficient service for Adams Morgan

  • Passed support for multiple, unrelated zoning variances for properties throughout Adams Morgan

    • Proposed zoning variance at 2302 Ontario Road NW (passed 7-0)

    • Proposed zoning special exception at 1837 Vernon Street NW (7-0)

    • Proposed PUD and Zoning Map Amendment at 2384 Champlain Street NW (7-0)

  • Approved (7-0) ANC 1C's budget for the 2025 fiscal year

  • Authorized (7-0) use of ANC 1C funds to change the website host

    • I spent many hours building a new website for ANC 1C

    • Have a look at the new layout and share your thoughts!

  • Helped prepare Kalorama Park's Jardín de Mariposas (Butterfly Garden) for winter weather

    • This flower garden is entirely supported by volunteers

    • If you're interested in helping with the garden in 2025, let me know and I'll get you in touch with the organizers

WHAT'S UP NEXT
  • November 5: Election day. If you haven't voted already, find a polling place near you

  • November 6: ANC 1C general meeting (agenda here, link to attend here)

  • Ongoing: I am organizing with residents and commissioners regarding issues at residential properties controlled by UIP Property Management

    • If you've had problems while living in a UIP property and we haven't already spoken, please send me a message
